Transitioning from Adobe Photoshop to The Gimp can feel a little unnatural at times, but after you learn the tricks, you are good to go! A technique I used to use very frequently in Photoshop was selecting a section of an image and then copying it to the clipboard, then launching a new file that has those dimensions and paste what was copied to the clipboard into the new image file. The Gimp has this same capability but saves you a step! Here is a short tutorial about how to do this with The Gimp.
- Choose the Rectangular Selection Tool from the main toolbar
- Left click and drag across the area in your image that you want to select
- Click the Edit menu, select copy

- Next, click the Edit menu again, select Paste as, and then select New Image
- Now you have your new cropped image
And there you have it. A new cropped image of your selection. Easier than Photoshop.
