How To Cut A Selection And Paste It Into A New File Using The Gimp Shop

Transitioning from Adobe Photoshop to The Gimp can feel a little unnatural at times, but after you learn the tricks, you are good to go! A technique I used to use very frequently in Photoshop was selecting a section of an image and then copying it to the clipboard, then launching a new file that has those dimensions and paste what was copied to the clipboard into the new image file. The Gimp has this same capability but saves you a step! Here is a short tutorial about how to do this with The Gimp.

  1. Choose the Rectangular Selection Tool from the main toolbar

Use the Gimp Rectangular Selection Tool

  2. Left click and drag across the area in your image that you want to select
Make selection by draggin accross your picture
  3. Click the Edit menu, select copy
    Click Edit, then Copy
  4. Next, click the Edit menu again, select Paste as, and then select New Image

Click Edit, Paste as, New Image

  5. Now you have your new cropped image
Image after you have done the Paste As, New Image

And there you have it. A new cropped image of your selection. Easier than Photoshop.
