In today’s graphic design world, Adobe Photoshop brushes are an easy way to make an effective design quickly. In this tutorial, I will show you how to install a Photoshop brush and then use it in The Gimp
- Be sure that The Gimp is not running
- After you have downloaded your brush, you have to move it into the Gimp’s Brushes folder located at /usr/share/gimp/2.0/brushes/ if you are on Ubuntu Linux
You can simply run this command in the terminal:

sudo mv BrushName.abr /usr/share/gimp/2.0/brushes/ - Next launch The Gimp, since the brush is located in the brushes folder, The Gimp will automatically add it to the brush library. Wow that’s better than Photoshop!
- Create a New File: File -> New
- Select the brush tool from the toolbar
- Click on the button next to Brush: in the Paintbrush properties area. A menu will pop up filled with your brushes. Locate your new brush and click on it.
- Now mouse over your image file, and click the left mouse button once. You should see the brush. You can really make a picture quick.
