How To Install Photoshop Brushes In The Gimp

In today’s graphic design world, Adobe Photoshop brushes are an easy way to make an effective design quickly. In this tutorial, I will show you how to install a Photoshop brush and then use it in The Gimp

  1. Be sure that The Gimp is not running
  2. After you have downloaded your brush, you have to move it into the Gimp’s Brushes folder located at /usr/share/gimp/2.0/brushes/ if you are on Ubuntu Linux
You can simply run this command in the terminal:
    sudo mv MetalBrush.abr /usr/share/gimp/2.0/brushes
    sudo mv BrushName.abr /usr/share/gimp/2.0/brushes/
  3. Next launch The Gimp, since the brush is located in the brushes folder, The Gimp will automatically add it to the brush library. Wow that’s better than Photoshop!
  4. Create a New File: File -> New
  5. Select the brush tool from the toolbar
  6. Click on the button next to Brush: in the Paintbrush properties area. A menu will pop up filled with your brushes. Locate your new brush and click on it.

  7. Now mouse over your image file, and click the left mouse button once. You should see the brush. You can really make a picture quick.
